Pilates is an innovative, full body conditioning program designed to strengthen the core musculature as it lengthens the body. This dual emphasis leads to a longer, leaner, more flexible, better toned, and more evenly developed physique. The focus on breath and properly performed movements creates fluidity and balance in the body.
Pilates works on balancing the body. It also builds strength where you are weak, flexibility where you are tight and stability in your core musculature. A consistent Pilates program (2-3 sessions per week) will significantly improve posture and alignment as it enhances balance, stamina, coordination, strength, and flexibility.
Not at all. The Pilates method was developed over 80 years ago (see history of Pilates) and has been taken in every direction since then.
Yes, but only if you practice Pilates in conjunction with Cardio work and healthy eating habits. It is not a "get skinny quick" program. It is a process that takes patience and determination and a willingness to succeed
In Pilates you will continue to get stronger and leaner the longer you practice. It is safe to say that most clients never plateau will practicing Pilates. You are always challenging your body in different ways everyday. Each workout is never the same. We don't keep your body "guessing" as some exercise programs claim. We work hard to keep your body and mind sharp by integrating them both into a full body workout, therefore using the most efficient movement for any particular action.
Yes! I will encourage everyone to at least try Pilates, although not every program is right for every person. Those that practice Pilates for at least six months learning the foundations are most likely to continue with Pilates on a regular basis. Pilates is a process and it is the basic principals that take the most time to learn.
Joseph Pilates developed his innovative equipment to help the body become well balanced. The Cadillac, Reformer, and Chair are all pieces of equipment that use spring resistance to strengthen your body from the inside out. The moveable carriage and pulley system of the Reformer guide the body to use controlled fluid movements. There are other pieces of equipment such as the Spine Corrector, Ladder Barrel, and many small props used in Pilates lessons. They are effective tools to integrate fun and modifications into a daily workout!
Private sessions are a great way to learn more about your body. The personal attention you receive with private instruction ensures that you have correct form at all times. If you are performing Pilates exercises without the watchful eye of an experienced Pilates instructor you could be risking injury to your spine. A qualified Pilates instructor also knows how to make adjustments and modifications for those with special problems or limitations. Remember that Pilates was originally developed by Joseph Pilates as a form of physical rehabilitation. We at Madison Pilates, LLC do not prescribe, diagnose or rehabilitate, however, if you are experiencing chronic back, shoulder, neck or any other pain, try private instruction of the Pilates method and see if it is something that works for you!
The mat classes are based on a series of exercises performed lying, sitting, kneeling, and standing. These classes are taught in a small group setting. (5-10 people) Because Pilates focuses so much on spinal movement and core stabilization, it is best to have smaller classes that allow for more personal attention. It is also best to have taken a series of introduction or beginner level classes before moving on to the next level. If you are suffering from an injury or have recently undergone surgery I suggest starting out with private instruction.
All participants that are new to Madison Pilates, LLC must take ONE private lesson from Marissa. Please understand that this is for your benefit and safety. Please understand that as a new student we do not know you, your body, or your health and fitness history. The consultation will take up to one hour and will include a tour of the studio, body assessment to determine places of weakness and imbalances, and a basic private Pilates lesson. This is to help the instructors get to know you so we can make personal adjustments and modifications so you get the most out of your Pilates experience. Please see cost and tuition for price of one time consultation.
Something light and comfortable. Most clients prefer to dress in layers in case they are warm or cold. You can adjust your clothing to your comfort level. Also, no shoes are allowed in the studio. There is a designated area for shoes, coats, and purses. You may consider leaving your purse at home or locked in your trunk or you can bring it in the classroom.
